What is Mindfulness?

Today’s families are living in a time-pressed, technology-driven, overly-scheduled world. The pace and stimulation of life today has the brains of many children and adults operating in a constant state of fight or flight. The result is a significant increase in stress and anxiety at younger and younger ages, difficulties with attention and concentration, problems with our physical health and a decreased sense of happiness.

At Mindful Life we define mindfulness as paying attention to the present moment with kindness. Mindfulness practices stimulate the prefrontal cortex of the brain. When we practice mindfulness regularly we feel happier, healthier, calmer, less anxious, less stressed, and it is easier for us to concentrate and think clearly.

Mindfulness can be practiced in many ways. Formal practices include becoming aware of your breath, noticing your thoughts, paying attention to sounds, visualizations, and focusing on sensations in your body to name a few. Informal practices can include eating mindfully, hiking mindfully, or dedicating time to be fully engaged and present with your family.

The Mindful Life programs combine what we know about the brain with practices that help it function most effectively. We believe that small changes can make a big difference for the young and the old. We also believe that if we can teach children mindfulness skills early they will live happier, healthier and more productive lives.
